River Trail Nature Center Grand Opening Sep. 10

River Trail Nature Center in Northbrook will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary and Grand Re-Opening on Wednesday, September 10 from 11 A.M. until 1 P.M.  Some of the center’s new features include a 3,500 square-foot "River Room," new and renovated interpretive nature displays, a new bird watching area, insect room, a new turtle pond and children’s play area.

— The Glenview Area Historical Society’s Annual Ice Cream Social will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.  Saturday, July 12 on the lawn of the museum at 1121 Waukegan Road.  Music will be provided by Glenview Concert Band’s Dixieland Ensemble and Cuddles the Clown will entertain the kids with face painting.  Author Beverly Dawson will be on hand to sign copies her books on village history.  The public is invited.

—  The Glenview Library Book Sale is set for Saturday, July12 and  Sunday, July 13. Shoppers can pick up bargain copies of fiction and non-fiction books,  almost-new mysteries, cookbooks, art books, and peruse a huge selection of children’s book.  All will be priced under $4.  DVDs, CDs, videos, and audio-books will also be available at 1970 Glenview Road.

— State Representative Beth Coulson hosts a town hall meeting on Alzheimer’s Disease from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26 at the North Shore Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. Illinois is currently reviewing all state programs and services it provides for people with Alzheimer’s, so Coulson will be taking notes.  For more information call 847-724-3233.

— Friends of the Glenview Library’s used book sale is set for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 12 and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, July 13.

— The Eighth Annual Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Run will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 31 at Maple School, 2370 Shermer Road, Northbrook. Registrants receive a t-shirt and are automatically entered in a raffle. Prize winners for the raffle are announced after the race. Last year, over 650 people from as far as Texas took part. This is a Chicago Area Runners Association sponsored event. Funds raised will support  scholarships at Glenbrook North and South High Schools, assist in ALS research, and support special District 30 projects. For more information, call 847-400-8900. — Glenview State Bank will once again provide an opportunity for individuals to securely dispose of paper documents, cancelled checks, files and other papers from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 14 at the bank’s Northbrook branch, 1707Shermer Road, Northbrook. Drive-thru service will be provided with an industrial shredding truck on site. You can bring up to 25 lbs. of paper documents in paper bags. No plastic please!

— Glenview’s public library hosts Decades of Dresses, a 20th century fashion show featuring more than 20 vintage dresses from the collections of Ruth Thomas and Chloe Berg at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27 in the Maynard Room. Call the library to register.

— The library will close at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 31, but the Maynard Room will remain open to showcase new Nintendo Wii and Xbox360 systems plus new gear like Guitar Hero and Rock Bank for the Xbox and Wii Play and Wii Sports. Teens can bring their own games to play against others on three screens. Pizza, pop and snacks will be served.

— Registration for Glenview Park Golf Club’s Youth Golf Competition and the Youth Golf Championship is underway. The program is open to kids 11-18. — The plan commission has pushed back its discussion of changes to Glenview’s storm water management ordinance. The topic is now on the panel’s March 11 agenda. The meeting will be cablecast, or you can show up at 7 p.m. to hear the meeting in person at Village Hall and to offer your own ideas.

The Rotary Club of Glenview-Sunrise will host a wine tasting fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. April 12 at the Old Willow Wine Shoppe, 1500 Paddock Drive in Glenview. The event will feature fine wines, appetizers, a silent and live auction. Tickets are limited. The price is $50 per person. For more information, call 847-715-9194.

— On Tuesday, February 26 the plan commission will review proposed changes to storm water management rules governing construction of new homes and additions. If you plan to build or expand a single-family home or if you’ve had flooding that could be linked to neighbors, consider sharing your experience at 7 p.m. in Village Hall. The meeting will be available on cable.

Village staff will unveil plans for improving the intersection of West Lake Avenue and Greenwood Road at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 26 at the police station’s community room.

— At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 27 the plan and appearance commissions will hold a joint workshop on the approval process for temporary banners. The public is invited to that meeting at Village Hall.

— The Book Market at The Glen Town Center and the library offer Air Station Imagination: Flight-to-Fun Kids Club at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1. Award-winning storyteller Mike Lockett will offer tales accompanied by zany sound effects. Stop at the Youth Services Desk of the library to get a membership card for kids six and up.

Beyond Basics, a 3-session computer workshop begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4 in the training room of the library. Review Internet basics and then learn advanced search techniques. Second and third sessions offered on Tuesdays, March 11 and 18. You must register for all three sessions and have Internet experience.

An Online Accounts Computer Workshop is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5.  Learn to set up and manage eBay and PayPal accounts for buying and selling safely online. Bring checking account and credit card information.  Attendees must have Internet expertise.

A Getting Started With Microsoft Word workshop will be offered at 2 p.m. Friday, March 7 in the library’s training room. Learn the basics of word processing. Attendees should have basic knowledge of computers and experience using a mouse. “Waiting to Inhale” is an award-winning documentary that explores the issues surrounding medical marijuana.  With a bill now pending in the Illinois legislature, supporters invite the public to a couple of free showings at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 20 at Fisk Hall, 1845 Sheridan Road, Evanston and at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the auditorium of the Lurie Medical Research Center, 303 E. Sign up for the Citizens Academy, a program that meets weekly at the police station and allows residents to learn about officer training, the workings of the crime lab, traffic issues, the public safety dispatch system and much more. — The Senior Center is a resource for all older adults. In addition to a wide range of recreational activities, it offers the services of a Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer to assist with health insurance planning, tax and financial advice. The center also provides defensive driving programs, blood pressure testing and the services of a podiatrist, a speaker program, wood carving/crafts and tai chi instruction. Glenview nonprofits, community groups and religious organizations are invited to send up to 100 brochures to the Village Hall, 1225 Waukegan Road, for the community table. — The next meeting of representatives from the village, District 34 and park district is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, February 7 in the Police Station, 2500 East Lake Avenue. The group is still trying to decide whether it makes sense to build a single administration building that could be shared.

— Bring unwanted medications, syringes, needles and lancets to the former police station next to Village Hall (1225 Waukegan Road) on the first Friday of the month between 9 a.m. and noon for proper disposal.
